How can we use the expertise we’ve developed over the past six years to support organizations and businesses beyond the human rights world?

That’s the question we’ve been holding over the past few months, as we build our latest offering: Horizontal Labs

We’re incredibly excited to announce the launch of this new branch of Horizontal. Horizontal Labs is a tech consultancy for anyone looking for safer and more ethical tech. We’re a full-service team here to take care of the tech so you can focus on growing your work.

Since Horizontal was created 6 years ago, we’ve been focused on tool development for the human rights community. We spend most of our time, energy, and resources on building tech that’s transparent, safer, and a joy to use. The result? We’ve built a wide array of tech tools. There are the apps we talk a lot about like Tella, our human rights documentation tool on Android, iOS, Web, and soon Desktop; and Shira, our web-based anti-phishing training tool. But there are many other tools that we’ve worked on over the years, like Covid Diary, a privacy-preserving Covid symptom tracker, or Meerkat, an internal tool to monitor the health of servers.

In addition to our own tools, we’ve collaborated with external partners who hired us to build their tech: there was a web and mobile app for a citizen participation project in the Middle-East; and adding features to Euki, the privacy-preserving period tracker.

After working on so many tech projects for the human rights community, we’re ready for the next step! We’re now offering our services to anyone who needs support. As long as our values align, we’d be happy to take on any project where our design and development skills are needed. An app or website for your business to better engage with customers? We’re here for it. An internal tool to better collaborate with your colleagues? Happy to do it. Improving an existing platform that you already use? You got it.

By partnering with Horizontal Labs, you know you’re working with a team that:

  • Cares deeply about privacy and safety for your users and communities
  • Has the skills, expertise, and passion to build stable and performant technology
  • Advocates for user experiences that are friendly, intuitive and rooted in consent and agency
  • Is committed to challenging systemic oppression through our design and development practices

You shouldn’t have to compromise between hiring a team that can support your tech needs effectively, and values respectful collaboration, community safety, and protecting your users, data and work.

If you know an organization with tech needs, we would love to help. Get in touch and tell us what you’re dreaming up. We can’t wait to see what we can build together.
