Hello dear community,

How have you been? Over here, we’re still navigating the turbulence of the funding crisis situation, but at this point, we’re kind of in cruise mode. So, please remain seated with your seatbelts fastened while we share some exciting news! 👩‍✈️✈️💺

Introducing Nearby Sharing

Wanna see something cool? Nearby Sharing is almost ready for you. We’re so grateful for all the feedback you shared about how to make Tella more resilient during internet shutdowns — and we think you’re going to love what’s coming.

Demo of Nearby Sharing - fully offline, cross-platforms, encrypted file transfers.

Nearby Sharing lets you securely share files, fully offline, across platforms and devices, assuring end-to-end encryption. Here are some key details:

  • Independent of internet: Transfers work with or without an internet connection, even on surveilled or insecure Wi-Fi networks, by establishing a direct connection between devices instead of routing through the internet.
  • Works with Personal Hotspots: even if you don't have data on your phone's plan, you can still create a Personal Hotspot, invite the other person to connect to it, and be able to use Nearby Sharing.
  • Available on iOS, Android and Computer: there isn't any restrictions on which model of phone, brand or operative system you use. Nearby Sharing is designed to be accessible to any device able to install Tella
  • Encrypted: Files move directly from one Tella vault to another, encrypted and secure.
  • Anonymous: As you know, there’s no concept of “registered users” in Tella. Nearby Sharing connections happen locally, with no trace of who you shared with, where, or when.

Our friends at Convocation Research+Design will be doing an intensive, third party audit of Nearby Sharing, to make sure it's secure for you all before releasing it to production. We are also implementing UX and accessibility improvements recommended to our other friends at The Engine Room, after the UX research process they led for us.

New releases

While building Nearby Sharing, we’ve also been busy with other updates (because who doesn’t love multitasking? 🤪):

Tella Android 2.17.0 and Tella iOS 1.16.0 are live, with bug fixes, performance improvements, and support for a new language: Azerbaijani 🇦🇿. Thanks to the amazing volunteers (and the great coordination from Localization Lab project managers) Tella is now accessible in 22 languages.

Come say hi at the Global Gathering

We’ll be attending the Global Gathering in September. Will you be there too? Let me know ! I'd love to meet, say hi, and hear your feedback on the Nearby Sharing alpha. I'll bring my mate 🧉 too!

See you soon, and thank you for flying with Tella ✈️.

Besos,

Caro from the Tella Team
